If your teeth are out of place, you may benefit from a cosmetic treatment called Invisalign. It’s one of the orthodontic options available at the Wayne, PA office of Dr. Jonathan Stone. It's always good to know a little bit about a procedure you’re interested in before visiting your dentist, so take a minute to learn how Invisalign works and how it can make your smile look better in a matter of months.
How It Works
Invisalign is an advanced orthodontic system that uses multiple clear plastic trays to align your teeth. The shape of each tray gently forces your teeth into the more favorable position as determined by your dentist over a period of time. Computer imaging technology is used to take impressions of your teeth and design your custom trays. Each time you wear a new tray, the position of your teeth changes until your spacing or crowding issues are fixed.
How Long It Takes
You'll probably want to talk to your Wayne dentist about Invisalign when you learn how much time you can shave off your treatment plan compared to wearing standard braces. Whereas regular braces may take two years to better your smile, Invisalign takes a matter of months (many treatments span between six to 12 months). You’ll switch trays every two weeks or so and you must wear them for at least 20 to 22 hours per day.
A Preferred Alternative to Regular Braces
Metal braces are unsightly, painful and make it very difficult to eat all of your favorite foods (such as corn on the cob). They force your teeth to change position using tight tension bands, wires and brackets that cause some patients to complain of headaches. With Invisalign, your “braces” are almost invisible, the trays are comfortable to wear and you can take them out whenever you’d like at home or at the office.
