Your smile doesn't have to change forever due to tooth loss. Wayne, PA, dentist Dr. Jonathan Stone explains how dental implants can help dental implantsfill the spaces in your smile.

Replacing your roots is the key to the strength of your new tooth

Dental implants are synthetic versions of tooth roots. Once the implants are placed in your jaw during a minor oral surgical procedure, they begin to bond the bone. The bonding process, known as osseointegration, generally takes about three to six months and ensures that your implant will function just as well as your natural root. If your jawbone is a little too shallow, you may need to receive bone grafts before implant surgery can take place.

The visible part of your tooth is replaced with a dental crown. Dental crowns are artificial teeth created from an impression of your mouth. Crowns close the gaps in your smile, and more importantly, making chewing and biting foods much easier. Your new crown is connected to your tooth by an abutment, a tiny screw placed on top of the implant.

Implants offer several unique advantages

Dental implants are the only restoration method that replaces tooth roots. When you receive an implant soon after losing a tooth, you won't experience jawbone resorption, a common consequence of tooth loss. Constant stimulation from your tooth roots keeps your jawbone strong. Without it, the jawbone gradually shrinks. Your new implant exerts the same type of pressure on your jawbone as your natural tooth did and helps you avoid these consequences.

An implant is a good choice if you've lost one tooth, but the restorations can also be used to replace multiple teeth. Implant-supported dentures offer a more comfortable fit than removable dentures and don't decrease your ability to bite and chew hard foods.

Your implant can last a lifetime if you practice good oral hygiene habits. Brushing and flossing, in addition to regular visits to our Wayne office, will help you avoid infections that can threaten the health of your implants.
